The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has brought significant changes to the world of education, particularly in how Generation Z students learn and acquire knowledge. This article aims to analyze the impact of AI technology use on the learning independence (self-directed learning) of Generation Z university students, examining both positive and negative dimensions. Through a literature review approach, this article identifies that AI provides ease of access to information, personalized learning experiences, and greater efficiency in completing academic tasks. However, excessive reliance on AI may hinder the development of critical thinking, creativity, and independent problem-solving skills. Findings suggest that the learning independence of Generation Z students can be negatively affected when AI use is not accompanied by sufficient self-awareness and self-regulation. An integrative learning approach is needed, in which AI is utilized as a tool rather than a replacement for the thinking process. Implications for higher education institutions include the importance of designing curricula and AI-use policies that foster student independence, digital literacy, and academic integrity.
